Boston Events
Historical Sites
The North End of Boston, Massachusetts is one of the oldest
settlements in the United States. Originally, it was the preferred living quarters
of the English born Bostonians around the time of Paul Revere.
Indeed, a 15 year old Revere rang the bells at the early churches in the North
End as a part-time job before taking over his father's copper-smithing business.
From the American Revolution to the hey-dey of organized crime, the North End has
been at the core of America's most famous - and notorious - social developments.
For all you Soprano's fans out there, a trip to Boston's north
end would mean a trip to where it all began. The intense concentration of Irish, Jewish,
and Italian families living in poverty in the north end at the turn of the century led the
way for La Cosa Nostra to dominate over the Irish and Jewish mafia.
If the history of organized crime isn't up to your taste, look instead on other impressive sites of the past, including:
- Paul Revere's home
- Copp's Hill Burial Ground
- Old North Church; the site rumored to have inspired Herman
Melville's church sermon scene in the introduction to Moby Dick.
- The Holocaust Memorial erected by the North end's large Jewish population.
Your visit to Boston, Massachusetts, can bring you closer to the spirit
of America; from the rich historical architecture and past, to the tight-knit communities
that the city is composed of, Boston - and especially the North End - represent a piece of
the American mindset that is unique; and something to be especially proud of.
